I get to laugh with God as I encounter His humor (He is really funny! I mean, He created humor, right?). I get to experience the Love of the Father as He takes care of me. I enjoy the best friend bond between Jesus and I as we talk to each other about our likes, loves, hardships, etc. I am honored to see lives transformed as I share His LOVE with others in amazing ways.
It really is the best thing EVER!
However, this relationship I am talking about hasn’t always been my norm.
Let me explain…
I grew up believing in Jesus and I was blessed to live in a home where God was honored and loved. I was super involved in my youth group and other local ministries in the area. From a young age, I wanted to live out my faith and really dive into everything Jesus calls us to be as Christians.
I enjoyed church and I liked learning about Jesus. I was taught that Jesus was to be revered and honored and that His Love for me is unmatched. These are still HUGE, LIFE-CHANGING TRUTHS that I trust and rely on to this day.
As life events began to unfold, I discovered some more HUGE, LIFE-CHANGING TRUTHS about God and who He is as He relates to me. I was experiencing the relationship with my husband change in amazing ways as we grew into our new roles as parents. It was evolving and changing in ways I could never have anticipated. I loved almost every second of it. How we spoke to each other, touched each other, and cared for each other was new and different. It made me discover this desire for ALL my relationships on earth to grow in new ways and that caused me to wonder about how much deeper my relationship with God could be. If I desired for ALL my relationships to go deeper, then why not with God? I mean, what would that even look like? I was clueless, but I wanted to find out.
God doesn’t desire for our relationship with Him to stay the same. He desires to go deeper with us.
I decided to go after the part of God I knew the least about, the Holy Spirit. I began to read about the Holy Spirit, like I had so many times before, but now I began to wonder what it would be like to have encounters like the early church did in the book of Acts. I wanted to see the God of the Bible come alive.
I wanted the “Acts experience” that the early church had.
I kept thinking, why not, right?! If Jesus really is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), then where was that side of Him? Why was that side of God absent in my life?
However, you don’t know what you don’t know, and I definitely didn’t know how to look for God’s presence in this way, so I began asking pastors at my church to help get me connected to others that were seeking God in the way I was – people who were further along in their discovery of the Holy Spirit. I hoped they could help me understand AND experience all that God is.
I have had lots of hot beverages at coffee shops with some pretty amazing people. Each of them challenged me to learn as much as I can and to trust that the Holy Spirit will teach me (John 14:26).
Along the way, I realized I had God in a nice neat box that I packaged Him into, so I could use it to explain all that I experienced and encountered. I began to wonder if there was more to Him outside of the box.
So, I prayed and said,
“Jesus, I want to take you out of the box of ‘religion’ I have placed you in. Help me to be open to everything and anything you have for me.”
After that prayer, my life changed. The Lord has been so faithful to answer this prayer and it has been the most amazing life-altering, paradigm-shifting journey I could have ever asked for.
I challenge you to pray the same.
